My daughter’s musical obsession

You would be surprised to know that my daughter is obsessed with a music video at the age of 14 months.  It’s not Elmo who she loves or Teletubbies who by the way are banned in this house.  It’s a video from Eiji Oue, the conductor of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra.  One of her favourite compositions is Jupiter by Holst.  I use to play this to her daily when she was still just a little bean.

I didn’t realize how much she liked the tune until one day we were in the car and she was having a slight meltdown.  Ok it was hysterical screaming and crying because she wanted out of the car seat.  Then on the classical station just by chance, Jupiter started to play and there was complete silence in the backseat.  I was stunned!  She was just sitting there and swaying to the music.  She seemed so content.

I thought at first it was a fluke, until I found a video on Youtube with Eiji Oue as the conductor.  I played it for her and she sat there stunned.  A firecracker could have gone off and she wouldn’t have budged.   I thought it that it was because of the song, so I tried a different conductor for the piece, nope.  She wanted Eiji.

To be honest, he’s amazing to watch.  The passion that he has when he conducts is mindblowing.  I’m not sure I would be able to play under him, I would be too busy watching him.  He shows emotion through out the entire piece.

So now we watch him when she’s cranky or right before bed to calm her down.   She sits there and stares at my phone and when it’s done she tries to start it again.  I guess she could have worst obsessions then this at her age, you know like sticking things up her nose or trying to eat lint.

About Melissa

This is my "start over" blog. I had moved to the Netherlands for 2.5 years and found that it wasn't for me. I guess I'm too much of a Canadian at heart. So now I'm here in Canada with my toddler daughter who was actually born in NL. My dog is with my dad enjoying the good life and I am here trying to start over and get my life back.
